Worry involves a physical demonstration of emotion, a furrowing of the brow, a holding of the breath, a jigging of a leg or a tensing of any part of the anatomy.
Some time ago I noticed on waking up in the morning that my tongue was tightened against the roof of my mouth so I realised I was quite bothered about an issue. One way to help the technique work effectively for you is to make the decision that rather than worry about something you will only think about it instead. I could take a step back from the problem and find some constructive resolution which let my tongue relax while I slept. You could also cultivate an âI donât careâ attitude (as exemplified in the song). This isnât to encourage you to be an uncaring or irresponsible person but to remind you of the small difference in approach that gives you a space to make clearer choices.
Withdrawal from habitual mental over-involvement is echoed in the physical awareness that you have about balance and freedom in your poise and movement. Being regularly forward on your toes when out of the dance arena might be an indication that you are already hastily in the next moment without fully appreciating yourself and all possibilities in present time. Simply reconnecting to your heel bones goes a long way to recovering your equilibrium.
Poise and presence necessitate being in the present moment. Only then can you pivot physically or intellectually in whichever direction you please. This is the freedom that allows you to behave with grace under pressure.
We all live by our feelings so nervousness and anxiety are unlikely to go away but their impact can be lessened if you cultivate these attitudes. The build-up to performance either on stage or for an audition demands a singular focus, taking you outside of the everyday. It is the other emotionally based distractions, habitual stress-related reactions or genuine unpreparedness that introduce a different element of unhelpful stress.
With the help of the technique you can still make a choice to take the panic out of fear. F.M. called this âStaying in touch with your reasonâ. If you didnât learn it before, ask your teacher to teach you the Whispered Ah. This is one of those invaluable exercises that, if you have made friends with it, will propel you into performance freely moving and fully charged.
The Whispered Ah (not be confused with the Silent Ah sometimes taught in voice classes) is an exercise F.M. Alexander taught to his pupils. Its success depends on a genuine feeling of amusement/happiness. Achieving this is helped by realising that the sustained Ah is the basic tone of the word laughter in British received pronunciation. To the one who complained he couldnât think of anything funny, F.M. reportedly said, âWell go home and come back when you canâ.
Collecting funny thoughts is a lifetimeâs homework. Enjoy!27
